Did you read the story The Meaning of Life?

The story "The Meaning of Life" is of course not completely serious. Not many chain smokers return as chimneys. But sure, if you die with unfulfilled desires, then your soul will return in a body that gets the chance to fulfill these desires.

Are you tangled up?

Someone who dies from lack of food, may reincarnate in a rich country where there's more food than he can eat. Someone who is very attached to his wife, may meet her again in his next life. The same applies for negative attachment: if you die hating someone, you'll come back in a situation in which you see -and hate- this person again. A chance to decide that you don't want to hate him anymore. Or a chance to take revenge on him, so that he will hate you and you'll meet each other again in your next lives.

Many people are tangled up with one or more people that they keep fighting with, in one life after another. Not a nice prospect, to be chained to all the people that you don't like at the moment...

Coming to you sooner or later

You know Newton's famous law? Every action results in an equal but opposite reaction. It's not only for billiard balls, this law. If you steal an apple from a shop, you create an imbalance in the world. This imbalance will automatically be corrected; that's the nature of the world. So sooner or later someone will steal something from you.

If you give your time and energy to help someone, you'll get help when you need it. You can count on it. It is the law of nature. If you hurt someone unnecessary, you'll get the reaction too. It's unavoidable. So when something unpleasant happens in your life, it might well be the result of something unpleasant that you did in the past, or in your past lives.

Cutting the chain

Seeing things from this angle gives you a new perspective on things.

It doesn't mean that you should accept everything that happens. But it's good not to throw yourself in a tantrum. You might be the cause for the event. And even if not, your anger might be the cause for more problems in your next life...

So when something difficult or unpleasant happens, you have a choice. You can continue the chain of events that led up to this situation; you can also cut the chain.

Problems don't exist
Every problem, every temptation that comes up in your life, is not a problem -it's a chance. If you were an alcohol addict in your previous life, for sure you'll be tempted by alcohol this life again. And if you don't resist the temptation, you'll be reborn again with a weakness for alcohol. Again you will have to struggle with this. So it's better to resist the temptation this time.

If you can't stand a certain person, maybe you had difficulties with him or her in your previous life, maybe even in many lives. Here is your chance to stop quarreling with this person forever -stop even thinking negative things about him or her.

One of the major things all of us have to learn in our life-to-life evolution is to love others, even when we don't like them. Look around you. Isn't it true that you get many chances every day to learn this difficult thing?

To a good life
To control your anger, to control what and how much you eat, to help others instead of putting yourself in the center of your universe, to keep your mind free of negative thoughts, not to be jealous, to see the interconnectedness of everything, all these things we can learn on our lives-long journey towards the end of our spiritual evolution.

Every time again we will get the chance to learn them. Every time we encounter the same difficulties and temptations. Until we choose to overcome them, and we free ourselves from them.

And when we have chosen to overcome all of them, and we see the interconnectedness, the Oneness of everything, then we have arrived at the highest point of our evolution. At that moment we are free from habits that disturb us and free from guilt, fear and all other limitations. Then we can really begin to live.
